Why I Love Drafting

I Drafted This Three Bedroom Residence.

It's important to really enjoy your job, and there is something  about digital drafting that I really like.

I often use Draftsight, which is a free computer drafting tool that I am familiar with.  It's easy to use, and creating lines, dimensions, and text is very easy.  Sometimes I commit to digitally drafting homes or other buildings that I am familiar with, simply for the fun of using a CAD program.  Today I drew up a standard home that might be found just about anywhere.

There is nothing special about the small residence, other than the exercise of committing it to Draftsight.  In fact,  I would have probably failed my Architectural studios if I submitted a three bedroom tract home.  I like the drawing set nonetheless for a very good reason.

The final document is so very precise, and it's for this reason that I love drafting.  There is something very attractive in the accuracy of digital drafting.  I also enjoy using the computer keyboard and mouse.  It might just be me, but I  find the spring action of the keys satisfying, in a small way.

I'm reminded of a video which I recently watched that about working, jobs, and following your passion.  The idea of the video was to bring your passion with you, and I like to think I bring something with me when I draft.  Feel free to watch the video below.

Do you have a passion you would like to share?  Do you like drafting as much as me?  Or perhaps more than me?  Let me know in the comments.

Edit Jan. 11, 2014: I drafted a two story residence, and wanted to include it here.  The residence is similar to the one story residence that I drew a few weeks ago, and the image quality is as high as I could possibly manage without switching file formats from JPG to PDF.
